“How could I be so stupid?” I wailed, gazing at Stella, who was looking back at me. She'd been patient at first, but she was starting to fray around the edges a little. I couldn't blame her. I'd been bemoaning my situation for hours.

We'd become quite good friends. I never would have expected to get a new best friend from working at the bank, but I hadn't expected to fall in love with my sexy older boss, either. Both had happened.

I was over at her house, sprawled over her bed as she gazed at me, her dark eyes becoming impatient.

“So fuck him, then. Tell him you can keep a secret.” Her voice sounded strained, and there was a good reason for that. This wasn't the first time she'd said it.

“I would if I could,” I muttered. She didn't know Richard. Even if I were willing to bend (or blatantly break) the rules, he would never. I was surprised that he'd done the things he had.

“Look, can we be done talking about this? You know what I think already,” she said, and I sighed, but had to understand her frustration. It all seemed so simple to her. Fuck Richard and break the rules, or just get over Richard. Easy. Only not so much.

I nodded, and she smiled, relieved. I honestly couldn't blame her.

“I want to talk about this job shadow.” Whatever I'd expected, it hadn't been that. I knew Stella had had her interview with Richard, but I had assumed she'd taken it all as a joke, like it had started.

“What about it? I'm not going.” I raised an eyebrow at her. What was there to talk about?

“Well, I am, and I think you should, too.”

I blinked at her, then laughed. She had to be joking. She had a bit of a weird sense of humor, it was one of the things that I liked so much about her.

But she didn't laugh back, and I slowly came to realize that she was serious.

“Seriously. I mean it. I looked up how much they make, and besides, I don't want to be a teller forever. I mean, do you?”

I frowned. When she put it that way...

“It would be nice to move out of my parents' house,” I admitted, and she nodded.

“I mean, there's not really much of a chance that either of us will get it. But I think we should try,” she said firmly, and I shrugged.

“Why not?”

It wouldn't solve my main problem, but if I had to pine after Richard, at least I could do it with more money. And it would thrill the hell out of my parents.

As for the art thing... I was starting to wonder if I'd ever really thought that could be a serious career. Or if wanting to do it as more than a hobby was anything other than a leftover teenage rebellion.

Much to my own surprise, I was starting to get excited about this job opportunity.
